On Friday, June 1 2001 over 700 students,
parents, teachers, guidance counselors, school resource officers and
friends of YAR participated in the annual Walk for Peace. Now, in its
second year, the walk celebrates peace, and mobilizes school communities
around the principles of Youth as Resources and youth leadership. YAR
supporters from Sacred Heart University, Fairfield University Radio, The
Bridgeport Parent Center and Valley Substance Abuse Action Council in
Ansonia also lent their support. Students from Columbus, Curiale, Marin,
Hooker and Roosevelt Elementary Schools participated in the “5K” walk
carrying banners with peace slogans, and chanting for peace in all schools
and neighborhoods.
The Walk serves as the culminating event for Bridgeport YAR,
which this year gave almost $15,000 to Bridgeport students to carry out
community service and violence and substance abuse prevention projects in their
communities. The Graustein Memorial Fund, the Fairfield County Foundation, the
Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation, the Bridgeport Enterprise Community Fund,
the Plant Memorial Fund and the Bridgeport Schools support YAR. YAR is a program
of RYASAP. For more information about YAR, contact Soraya Bilbao at
