There are dozens of types of
mushrooms: legal, edible and harmless. However,
mushrooms belonging to the psilocybin species (“magic mushrooms) are nearly
all-small brown or tan mushrooms that are easily mistaken for any number of
non-psychoactive inedible or poisonous mushrooms in the wild.
Psilocybin mushrooms are illegal in the
United States
because they contain psilocybin and psilocin, which are specifically listed as
illegal.
Psilocybe mushrooms have been used for generations by Native Americans in
Central and
South America
. The mistaken impression that the
experience of using mushrooms is harmless is far from the truth.
The primary effects of the ingestion of these mushrooms is psychedelic.
Like other materials of this type, the chemicals in the mushrooms react
with prescribed medication (such as MAOIs) and have been known to trigger latent
psychiatric problems. Use of these
products has been shown to be especially dangerous for those with a family
history of depression or schizophrenia or early onset mental illness.
Similar, although usually less intense, to LSD experiences the potential
for negative hallucinations is high.
Slang terms: mushrooms, magic
mushrooms, mushies, shrooms, psiloybes, cubes, and liberty caps.
