Worried About a Friend?

Parent Information Sheet

The Meriden and Wallingford Substance Abuse Council (MAWSAC) is a
non-profit partnership of community leaders working together to reduce the incidence and prevalence of substance abuse.

As a community, all of us want young people to live long, happy, and healthy lives. MAWSAC, working together with the Superintendent of Schools, is distributing cards that will give tips to teens about how to help a friend who is troubled.
This project is adapted from a very successful program in the northeast region of Connecticut.

One side of the card explains where to turn for help and the other gives clues on how to take action to help a troubled person.

The card also doubles as a discount card, offering students who use it a discount at participating retailers and restaurants. Local businesses participating in this program are asked to give a discount to students who present the card as an additional incentive to retain it. Discounts are available to 6th to 12th grade students only.

Contacts on the card
A parent, school personnel, coach, or clergy member are individuals young people come in contact with frequently and all play a role in protecting and helping young people in their everyday lives. Infoline is the regional phone helpline, available for emergencies 24 hours a day, everyday that provides information and, if necessary, referral to social service agencies. Infoline personnel are trained to handle emergency situations.

We need your help
Please talk to your child about carrying this card. Please also encourage him or her to use the discount card and to ask that business prior to purchasing an item about the discount and any conditions. Also, talk to your children about making wise choices and decisions.

Working together, we can make a difference!

If you have questions, please contact MAWSAC at 203-294-3591.
